Fife Sports and Leisure Trust

Forever Young

We have a wide range of activities for all ages we have pulled together a small selection of activities which we feel would be suitable for older adults.

Benefits of staying physically active

Being physically active can assist in reversing the decline of physical function even in later life.

In comparison with inactive peers, active older adults have:

• higher levels of cardiovascular fitness and physical function

• improved disease risk factor profiles

• lower body weight

• lower incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases, coronary heart disease and stroke.

Physical activity can have a beneficial effect on symptoms caused by several diseases including:

• reducing joint pain in those with arthritis and osteoarthritis

• decreasing symptoms of breathlessness in those with COPD

• decreasing age related bone loss and increasing bone repair

The 2011 physical activity guidelines say that older adults should be encouraged to achieve 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week. Activities are most effective for producing health benefits when performed at least at a moderate intensity.

Furthermore, strength training is an integral part of any physical activity initiative for older adults.

It's Never Too Late to Start Exercising

Even if you have had an inactive lifestyle, there is good news. It's never too late to improve your health.

Growing older doesn't mean you have to lose strength or your ability to do everyday tasks. Exercise can help older adults feel better and enjoy life more, even those who think they're too old or too out of shape.

Ramblers Walking Routes

Walking is one of the easiest ways to get more active and is a simple and free way to become healthier. It is ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels. Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illness such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers.

Medal Route are three short circular walking routes that start and finish at the same location. These routes are designed to take approximately 15, 30 and 60 minutes. The starting/finishing point is called a Hub. We have created 13 Medal Routes walks for every sports and leisure centre across Fife - this means that you can enjoy another activity before or after your walk and make use of the fantastic facilities in each location.
