Hearty Welcome for Cardiac Instructor
May 2012

Fifers recovering from a heart incident have a new expert on their side.

St Andrews leisure attendant Stephen Clark has just become the latest Fife Sports and Leisure Trust employee to qualify as a British Association for Cardiac Prevention & Rehabilitation (BACPR) instructor.

That means Stephen, who’s based at the East Sands Leisure Centre, can lead gym and circuit classes tailor-made to boost the recovery of people who’ve suffered a cardiac incident.

Stephen earned his qualification during a recent BACPR Phase IV Instructor Training Course at Glasgow’s Western General Hospital, completing 35 hours of contact teaching time and 100 hours of study plus practical experience at cardiac rehab classes at Queen Margaret Hospital and Duloch Leisure Centre in Dunfermline.

“I always intended to do the cardiac rehab course so I would be able to help people who have suffered a cardiac incident and are attending the gym at East Sands Leisure Centre,” said Stephen.

“I also wanted to increase my general knowledge of delivering physical activity to clients who have previously suffered a cardiac incident that will enhance my knowledge at all levels of fitness instruction and coaching.
“I hope to start delivering classes in the near future and establish a new one at the East Sands Leisure Centre.”

Community-based Fife Cardiac Rehabilitation Services are offered at seven leisure centres across the Kingdom by Fife Sports and Leisure Trust in partnership with NHS Fife.

Congratulating Stephen on his achievement, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust programme and events manager Jacquie Stringer said: “The Phase IV instructor training is a rigorous programme that enhances the knowledge and skills of our instructors and brings long term benefits to local people recovering from a heart incident.“
