People enrolling on an established Fife-wide healthy-weight programme are now being offered a boost to reach their target weight.
For the first time, Winning by Losing - a long-running NHS Fife healthy-weight programme - is being delivered in partnership with Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, Fife’s leading provider of sports and leisure facilities.
Now, people in Glenrothes will be offered the chance to combine healthy weight-management advice with physical activities at Fife Institute of Physical and Recreational Education. Classes will be run by the Trust’s instructors who have been trained by a NHS Fife dietician to deliver the combined 12-week sessions.
Winning by Losing launches week commencing 16th August 2010 at the following Fife Sports and Leisure Trust Centres. Sessions run for 12 weeks. Each weekly class costs £3.50.

Alistair Simpson of Kirkcaldy is celebrating his loss of nearly 3 stones after attending one of the pilot sessions. Alistair spotted a poster advertising the new classes while waiting to see his GP at his local clinic.
He said: “I had made an appointment to see my GP because of ongoing health problems; it was while I was pacing up and down the waiting-room I spotted the Winning by Losing poster. It was then I decided that I needed to do something about my health, as so many of my problems were related to being overweight.
“I started the 12-week course in February and have never looked back. The format of the sessions is excellent - the information on diet, followed by an exercise session is really useful. But I also found the sessions really motivating, which is so important.
“I had tried other diets, as had some of the others attending the classes, but the difference with Winning by Losing is that it promotes long-term lifestyle changes. I now exercise regularly, I enjoy running and going to the gym, and I make walking part of my daily routine. And, almost without thinking about it, my diet has become much healthier.
“The difference it has made to my quality of life is incredible - I would recommend anyone who is struggling with their weight to try Winning by Losing.”
Jacquie Stringer, Fife Sports and Leisure programme and events manager, said: “We are delighted to be launching this programme with support from NHS Fife. The combination of healthy-eating messages and increased physical activity is something the Trust is keen to promote as evidence shows it can bring about long-term behavioural change.
“Although there are a number of commercial weight-loss groups in operation across Fife, we believe our instructors and facilities can deliver a unique package. We had over 400 notes of interest from customers who liked the idea of combined classes which could help them achieve results at very affordable prices.
“15 of our instructors received specialist training from NHS Fife which enables them to deliver a healthy-eating advice and weigh-in session, followed by a 45 minute low-level circuit class. The number of people who have taken part in our pilot sessions who now feel fitter and healthier is a great achievement for them and our Winning by Losing instructors.”
