Archie the Hippo cheers on coal-carrying competitors

The Scottish Coal Carrying Championships returned to Kelty last Saturday (August 28) and Archie the Hippo made an appearance to cheer on the competitors.

The annual event has been in existence since 1995 and its aim is to create a lasting link between the modern-day village and its’ rich coal mining heritage. It’s one of only two Coal Races in the world and is a family favourite with locals and visitors alike.

Our mascot Archie was on hand to give moral support to participants demonstrating their strength and determination to carry coal across the finishing line.

The men’s race requires participants to carry a 50-kilo bag of coal and the ladies’ race requires a 25-kilo bag of coal to be carried over 1000 metres through the village of Kelty. There were also races for children to carry a 15-kilo bag of coal.

Archie was joined by Fife Flyers, Geordie Munro as well as representatives of Fife College.

Fife Sports and Leisure Trust wants to say a big well done to everyone who took part, and we look forward to joining in the fun next year!
