How Movement Supports Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery

Cancer affects millions of people worldwide. In Scotland, over 36,000 new cancer cases were diagnosed in 2022, with lung, breast, bowel, and prostate cancers being the most common (Cancer Strategy Scotland). These figures highlight the continued importance of awareness, prevention and support.

Across our venues, we see every day how physical activity can make a meaningful difference before treatment begins, throughout the process, and during recovery.

Dr Ed Wallace, retired GP and Vice Chair of the Fife Sports and Leisure Trust Board of Directors, explains: “Activity is not a cure for cancer, but it is a powerful tool. Before diagnosis, it can help to reduce risk. During treatment, it supports energy, strength and mental wellbeing. After treatment, it helps people rebuild their confidence and regain a sense of themselves, reduces the risk of recurrence of the cancer and reduces the risk of long-term complications of the treatment.

Why Physical Activity Matters

Cancer is complex, but research shows that being active can support overall health and help reduce the risk of developing certain cancers.

How movement helps reduce cancer risk:

  • Maintain a healthy weight – excess body weight is linked with several cancers.
  • Regulate hormones – including growth hormone, testosterone, and oestrogen.
  • Support your immune system – regular movement helps immune cells function more effectively.
  • Reduce inflammation – long-term inflammation in the body is a known risk factor for many health conditions, including cancer. Exercising muscle has been shown to produce chemicals that reduce chronic inflammation
  • Boost cardiovascular health – supporting a stronger heart and healthier circulation.

Dr Ed Wallace adds: “Exercise often gets framed as a ‘chore’, but from a medical point of view, it is one of the most effective ways to support long-term health. Even moderate activity has benefits for almost every system in the body. It is never too late to begin, being active can significantly increase life expectancy and quality of life.

Being Active During Treatment

Cancer treatment can affect strength, mood and general wellbeing. Rest and recovery are essential, but gentle, supervised activity can help manage the side effects of treatment.

Being active can help to:

  • Reduce cancer-related fatigue – even light activity can help people feel less drained overall.
  • Support mood and mental wellbeing – movement can ease anxiety and low mood, and provide a sense of control.
  • Maintain strength and mobility – making day-to-day tasks easier and supporting independence.
  • Improve balance, confidence and sleep – all of which can be affected by treatment.
  • Reduce risk of complications – such as ongoing pain or swelling.

Dr Ed Wallace explains: “When someone is going through treatment, the goal is not always ‘fitness’ in the traditional sense. It’s also protecting function and preserving strength. The right type and level of movement, guided by professionals, can help people feel more like themselves during an incredibly challenging time.

Our Health and Wellbeing Programme

We are proud to deliver self-funded Health and Wellbeing programmes. In 2024/25, there were over 55,000 class attendances, more than 2,500 referrals, and 850 new participants supported through our Active Options Health and Wellbeing programme. These numbers reflect the scale of need in our communities and the impact that tailored, accessible activity can have on people’s lives.

For those affected by cancer, we offer dedicated support through our Active Move programme.

Active Move

Active Move is a group-based programme specifically for people living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis. It includes:

  • Specialist-trained instructors with cancer rehabilitation experience.
  • Gentle, progressive exercise plans.
  • Support managing fatigue, rebuilding strength, and improving mobility.
  • A welcoming, confidence-building environment.

Participants can join through referral from a GP, cancer nurse, hospital team, Maggie’s, or via self-referral depending on circumstances.

Our Partnership with Maggie’s and NHS Fife

We work closely with Maggie’s Fife, Fife Health and Social Care, and NHS teams. We also collaborate with more than 300 referral partners and across the region to ensure people affected by cancer can access safe and supportive physical activity.

Through our partnerships, we:

  • Deliver cancer support programmes at Maggie’s Centre at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy.
  • Provide clear referral pathways from clinical teams into our community classes.
  • Support people transitioning from clinical care to everyday movement in local venues.

Dr Ed Wallace highlights: “The partnership between Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, Maggie’s, NHS Fife, and Fife Health and Social Care Partnership ensures that no one is left navigating their recovery alone. We offer clinically informed, compassionate support that continues long after treatment ends.

Fife Sports and Leisure Trust are launching a new Performance Membership at Pitreavie Athletics Centre, giving customers access to an upgraded gym, an indoor 60-metre sprint track and an outdoor 400-metre athletics track, all for an introductory price of £21 per month.

Available exclusively at Pitreavie, the Performance Membership offers a focused option for regular users, while also helping to develop sporting talent across Fife, including aspiring athletes and those who prefer focused performance training.

The launch builds on Fife Sports and Leisure Trust’s growing strength and conditioning provision at venues including Cowdenbeath Leisure Centre and Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre, reflecting changing training habits and a greater focus on functional training. At Pitreavie, members benefit from specialist equipment, including Olympic lifting platforms and dedicated strength equipment, as well as access to the indoor and outdoor athletics facilities.

Fraser MacKenzie, Head of Sales and Commercial Development at Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, said:

“We’re seeing a real change in how people want to train, with increasing demand for spaces that support strength and conditioning. The Performance Membership at Pitreavie reflects that shift and helps us support people across Fife, including clubs and athletes, by providing a high-quality environment where individuals can train, improve and perform.”

Pitreavie Athletics Centre already has a strong community of athletes and committed gym users. The new membership builds on this foundation, creating a clear pathway for those who see the venue as their primary training base.

The Performance Membership is available to purchase from 3rd January 2026 at Pitreavie Athletics Centre reception. Find out more about the facilities, training offer, and how to join at: www.fifeleisure.org.uk/locations/pitreavie.

Fife Sports and Leisure Trust are welcoming customers into a transformed gym space at Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre following a £500,000 investment that has significantly expanded the gym floor and introduced a dedicated strength and conditioning area. The upgrade marks an important step in enhancing the venue’s fitness offer, reflecting growing demand for modern, flexible training environments.

Completed over several weeks, the refurbishment has created a more open and energising layout designed to support a wide range of fitness goals. The upgraded gym features premium Life Fitness cardio equipment, a dedicated Hammer Strength area (known globally for its performance-focused, plate-loaded equipment), custom Indigo Fitness squat racks, upgraded flooring, and enhanced sound and lighting, delivering a high-quality training environment for both everyday gym users and performance-focused members.

Fraser MacKenzie, Head of Sales and Commercial Development at Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, said:

“This upgrade is about much more than new equipment. It’s about creating a modern, welcoming fitness space that people feel excited to use and proud to be part of. The expanded gym floor and new strength and conditioning area give customers more freedom, more choice, and a better overall experience, while maintaining the strong community feel that Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre is known for.”

Throughout the refurbishment period, a temporary gym space enabled customers to continue their fitness routines. Staff are now looking forward to welcoming members into the upgraded facility and supporting them as they make the most of the new layout. The investment reinforces Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre’s role as a vibrant community hub, offering inclusive, high-quality facilities where people of all ages and abilities feel supported, motivated, and confident to be active.

This project reflects Fife Sports and Leisure Trust’s ongoing commitment to investing in modern, welcoming fitness environments that meet customer needs and encourage long-term participation in physical activity.

Fife Sports and Leisure Trust is celebrating International Volunteer Day by hosting two volunteer recruitment events this December. The first will take place on 7th December from 12pm to 3pm at Carnegie Leisure Centre, followed by a second event on 10th December from 2pm to 7pm at Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre.

International Volunteer Day, held annually on 5th December, highlights the vital role volunteers play around the world. This year’s theme, “Every Contribution Matters”, reflects how every act of volunteering, no matter the size, helps strengthen communities and create meaningful change. Fife Sports and Leisure Trust is inviting members of the public to drop in during the December recruitment days to find out what volunteering involves and apply on the day. The events will be informal and welcoming, with staff available to talk through roles, explain the support offered and help people identify opportunities that suit their interests and availability.

Volunteers are at the heart of the organisation’s work, helping local people feel confident, connected and active. The volunteering programme has expanded significantly over the past year. The number of active volunteers has increased by 150%, and there are now more than 13 roles available across aquatics, sport, health and community outreach.

Karen Marsh, Human Resources Manager at Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, said:

“These events are a great opportunity for anyone who has ever thought about volunteering to come along and see what it involves. It is a brilliant way to build skills, gain confidence, make new connections, and add valuable experience to your CV. Whether someone wants to develop professionally, meet new people or support their community, there is a place for them at Fife Sports and Leisure Trust. International Volunteer Day is about celebrating those who give their time, and we hope these events inspire even more people to get involved.”

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic 1500m T20 gold medallist Owen Miller, who got involved with volunteering at Carnegie Leisure Centre, said:

“Volunteering has been a really rewarding experience for me. It’s great to be part of a team that helps people feel stronger, more confident and part of a community. Seeing how much Fife Sports and Leisure Trust has grown its volunteering programme makes me proud to play a small part in it. Whether you’re an athlete or someone simply wanting to give back, there’s a role for everyone.”

Anyone interested in finding out more is encouraged to attend one of the December recruitment events or visit the Fife Sports and Leisure Trust website to explore current opportunities. Why Lifting Matters More as We Age

Growing older can bring physical changes that affect how we move, feel, and live day to day. Many people notice that their balance, flexibility, or strength isn’t quite what it used to be, and everyday activities like carrying shopping, climbing the stairs, or getting up from a chair can start to feel more challenging.

However, these changes don’t have to define ageing. A growing body of research shows that strength training (sometimes called resistance training) is one of the most effective ways to protect your health, mobility, and independence as you age (National Institute on Aging).

Unlike high-impact workouts, strength training can be gentle, safe, and highly adaptable. It focuses on building and maintaining muscle, bone, and joint health through controlled movements, all of which support balance, energy, and confidence.

Few people understand the benefits better than our Vice Chair of our Board of Directors and retired GP, Dr Ed Wallace, who explains:

“I’ve spent my career seeing first-hand how movement protects both physical and mental wellbeing. Ageing doesn’t mean giving up activity, it means finding the right kind, done regularly, to keep you strong and independent for longer.”

What Happens as We Age

From around the age of 30, we begin to lose muscle mass and strength. It can accelerate in our 50s and beyond, making us more prone to fatigue, weakness, and falls. Bone density also decreases, which increases the risk of fractures and limits movement confidence.

The good news is that much of this decline can be slowed, or even reversed, through regular, progressive strength training.

“Muscle and bone are living tissues that respond to use. Regular resistance exercise provides the stimulus they need to stay strong, supporting balance, mobility, and day-to-day independence.” – Dr Ed Wallace, Vice Chair, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust Board of Directors

The Power of Lifting

There are many reasons why older people may avoid strength training, from lack of knowledge to stigma or fear of pain. One of the most common concerns is the belief that exercise might worsen existing muscle or joint discomfort.

However, research demonstrates that older adults are no more likely to experience muscle soreness after training than younger people, and in many studies, they report less. This challenges the long-held assumption that ageing muscles are inherently fragile or slow to recover (Journal of Aging and Physical Activity).

Although these findings confirm that muscle damage risk is not elevated with age, it’s still normal to experience mild, short-term soreness when beginning a new activity.

“After a session, muscles switch on repair pathways that remain active for hours, laying down stronger tissue. A little stiffness when you begin is perfectly normal, it means your body is adapting. Start gently, allow recovery, and you’ll soon notice less soreness and more strength.” – Dr Ed Wallace, Vice Chair, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust Board of Directors

The Benefits of Strength Training for Older Adults

According to the NHS, older adults should do some type of physical activity every day to improve health and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Adults aged 65 and over should aim to:

  • Be physically active every day, even if it’s just light activity.
  • Do activities that improve strength, balance, and flexibility on at least two days a week.
  • Complete at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity if already active, or a combination of both.

Performed two or three times a week, strength training can lead to improvements, both physically and mentally. It helps to:

  • Build strength and muscle mass – supporting everyday movement, from lifting shopping to climbing stairs.
  • Increase bone density – reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
  • Improve balance and coordination – lowering the chance of falls and injuries.
  • Boost mood and mental wellbeing – exercise supports brain health and reduces stress.
  • Support heart and metabolic health – beneficial for blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol.
  • Enhance sleep and energy levels – many people report better quality rest.
  • Protect independence and confidence – making daily life feel easier and safer.

“In practice, the biggest improvements I see are functional. Such as the ability to lift grandchildren comfortably, walk with greater stability, and move with renewed confidence. These changes make a measurable difference to quality of life.” – Dr Ed Wallace, Vice Chair, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust Board of Directors

Hear from Our Members

Former member of the Royal Air Force (RAF), Edward, is the most senior member of Fife Sports and Leisure Trust and a regular at Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre. At 96 years old, his commitment to fitness is as strong as ever, showing that it’s never too late to start living an active life.

“I’ve always been active, but my fitness journey started later in life. I was 78 when I first stepped into the gym at Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre. Going to the gym makes me feel younger, I’m fitter than I was when I started. I can still touch my toes! And I don’t groan when I pick something off the floor now. If you’re thinking about being more active, don’t hesitate. The gym isn’t just for the young, it’s for anyone who wants to feel better, both physically and mentally.” – Edward, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust Member
