About the Fife Gingerbread Initiative
Changing lives through partnership and purpose
In 2025, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust launched a successful partnership with Fife Gingerbread and Fife Council to support lone parents into employment through a targeted initiative offering four paid six-month work placements. These placements were based across four of the Trust’s venues, carefully designed to provide flexibility, training, and real work experience that could help participants overcome common barriers to employment.
Lone parents often face several obstacles when trying to enter or re-enter the workplace.
These barriers include:
- Lack of affordable childcare
- Gaps in work history or outdated skills
- Limited flexibility in traditional working hours
- Low confidence or self-esteem
- Financial instability that makes unpaid experience unrealistic

Who are Fife Gingerbread?
Fife Gingerbread are a well-established charity supporting lone parents and vulnerable families across Fife. Their work focuses on removing barriers, promoting social inclusion, and empowering individuals with tailored support that includes advice, advocacy, and access to meaningful opportunities.
Their collaborative approach, working with partners like Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, ensures the families they support are not just helped temporarily but are given pathways to long-term sustainability and independence.
Who Was Involved?
In December 2024, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust hosted a Work Inspiration Day at Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre, welcoming all lone parents supported by Fife Gingerbread. The event provided a hands-on introduction to the wide variety of roles within the organisation, giving attendees the chance to meet staff, ask questions, and experience the workplace environment firsthand. The day also featured discussions about flexible working, skills development, and Fife Sports and Leisure Trust’s commitment to inclusive employment. The event played a key role in building confidence, raising awareness of available opportunities, and helping parents see themselves as part of the workforce.
This event acted as a catalyst for the next stage of the initiative, sparking interest and building the confidence that led directly into the recruitment and placement phase.
This initiative was a three-way partnership involving:
- Fife Sports and Leisure Trust who provided the paid placements and ongoing training
- Fife Gingerbread who supported and prepared the participants for workplace readiness
- Fife Council who contributed funding and strategic support
Over ten lone parents were interviewed during the project, and four were selected for the paid placements. All four were given roles that offered flexible working hours aligned with family and school commitments. That includes the flexibility of working shifts from 10am – 2pm as an example, or a three-day working pattern. Additionally, the four roles that were awarded were also give access to training, and a genuine opportunity to gain meaningful employment experience.
Additionally, the initiative has set a new standard: any lone parent supported by Fife Gingerbread who applies to work at Fife Sports and Leisure Trust will now receive a guaranteed interview, increasing their chances of long-term employment.
