Fife Sports and Leisure Supports Drowning Prevention Week 2026

The organisation marks a decade of delivering Learn to Swim by promoting vital water safety skills and giving children the chance to win a year of free swimming lessons.

Fife Sports and Leisure Trust is proud to support Drowning Prevention Week 2026, a national campaign led by the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) to raise awareness of water safety and help prevent accidental drowning.

Taking place from 13th to 20th June 2026, the campaign encourages children, young people and families to learn essential water safety skills and understand how to stay safe in and around water.

This year also marks a significant milestone for Fife Sports and Leisure Trust as it celebrates 10 years of delivering the National Learn to Swim Framework in partnership with Scottish Swimming and Scottish Water. Since launching the programme in 2016, the organisation has supported more than 80,000 swimmers on their journey, trained around 220 instructors, and now helps more than 8,800 learners each week build confidence in the water and develop vital lifesaving skills.

As part of Drowning Prevention Week, swimming instructors across Fife will deliver dedicated Water Safety lessons within the Learn to Swim programme. Aligned with the National Learn to Swim Framework, these lessons will focus on essential skills including floating techniques, self-rescue, cold water awareness and understanding the Water Safety Code.

Learning to swim is about much more than developing confidence in the water. It is a vital life skill that can help keep people safe throughout their lives and reduce the risk of drowning.
