Fife Sports and Leisure Trust Celebrates Volunteers’ Week by Championing Local Impact and Growth

Fife Sports and Leisure Trust is proudly joining the UK-wide celebration of Volunteers’ Week, running from 2nd–8th June 2025, by recognising the vital contributions of volunteers who support its services and bring positive change to communities across Fife.

Volunteers are at the heart of the organisation’s work. From supporting swim sessions and health classes to helping at community events and leading sports activities, their time, energy, and enthusiasm play a key role in making leisure accessible, inclusive, and impactful.

As one of only ten organisations selected for Active Kindness 2024–2025, a national campaign led by Community Leisure UK, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust has been enhancing its volunteering programme with new tools, peer learning, and tailored resources. This investment has supported significant growth, with the number of volunteer roles increasing from just 1 role in the Health and Wellbeing Team to more than 13 across aquatics, sport, customer service, and community outreach.

Volunteer Impact Highlights (2024–2025):

  • 150% increase in the number of active volunteers.
  • 13+ meaningful roles now available across multiple teams.
  • 17 Pickleball Ambassadors supporting programme growth.
  • 13 placement students welcomed across venues in 2024/2025.
  • Over 40 pupils attended a Work Inspiration Day at Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre in 2024.
  • Paid six-month traineeships launched in partnership with Fife Gingerbread.

Emma Walker, Chief Executive of Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, said: “We want to say a heartfelt thank you to all our amazing volunteers. Your energy, compassion, and commitment are truly inspiring. You’re not only helping us deliver vital services across Fife but also creating real, lasting change in people’s lives. Volunteering opens doors to employment, builds confidence, and fosters meaningful community connections.”

Among those giving their time is Owen Miller, Tokyo 2020 Paralympic 1500m T20 gold medallist, who has been volunteering at Carnegie Leisure Centre, supporting gym users and sharing his passion for sport and community wellbeing.

Owen said: “Volunteering has been a really rewarding experience for me. It’s great to be part of a team that’s helping people feel stronger, more confident, and part of a community. Hearing about all the work Fife Sports and Leisure Trust has done to grow the volunteering programme makes me proud to play a small part in it. Whether you’re an athlete or someone looking to give back, there’s a role for everyone.”

Looking ahead, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust will continue to invest in volunteering through new training pathways, skills-based roles, and recruitment events. A recent example is the launch of its Aquatics Assistant Volunteer Programme with Developing the Young Workforce Scotland, which offers high school pupils hands-on experience and a potential route into employment as a Swimming Instructor.

The organisation also extends its sincere thanks to its partners, whose ongoing support has helped grow and sustain this work. These include Volunteer Scotland, Community Leisure UK, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, Developing the Young Workforce Scotland, Fife Voluntary Action, Fife College, and local charities such as Fife Gingerbread. Their collaboration has helped create new pathways into volunteering and work, while strengthening community engagement.

Fife Sports and Leisure Trust encourages anyone interested in giving back, gaining experience, or exploring a new direction to consider volunteering. The process is simple and accessible, with flexible opportunities to suit a wide range of interests and availability. Whether someone has a few hours a week to offer or is looking for a more regular commitment, there are rewarding ways to get involved and make a difference in local communities.
