Fife Sports and Leisure Trust’s ‘Active Move’ Campaign Supports People Affected by Cancer

Fife Sports and Leisure Trust’s Active Move health and wellbeing campaign is designed to empower people affected by cancer to stay physically active before, during and after treatment.

Running from 23rd February to 12th April 2026, the campaign carries a simple but powerful message, “Stay active, move strong”.

Active Move aims to increase self-referrals into specialist programmes by encouraging individuals to take an active role in their own wellbeing. The campaign speaks to both those preparing for treatment and those in recovery, reinforcing that movement remains possible, and beneficial, at every stage of the cancer journey.

The campaign builds on the success of Fife Sports and Leisure Trust’s wider Health and Wellbeing programme, which continues to deliver significant impact across Fife. In 2024/2025 alone:

  • Over 55,000 attendances were recorded across specialist health classes.
  • More than 2,500 referrals were received from over 300 health and social care partners.
  • 850+ new participants were supported through tailored programmes.
  • Programmes were delivered in partnership with organisations including Fife Health and Social Care, Maggie’s Fife, Fife Social Justice Teams and Older Persons Housing Initiatives.

These figures reflect the growing demand for structured, specialist physical activity that supports people living with long-term health conditions, including cancer.

Emma Walker, Chief Executive of Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, said: “We know that a cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, and it can be difficult to know where to begin when it comes to rebuilding strength and confidence. Active Move is about giving people reassurance that support is available, and that physical activity, delivered with specialist guidance, can play a vital role in their recovery and overall wellbeing.

Our Health and Wellbeing programmes are already supporting thousands of people across Fife every year. This campaign strengthens that commitment and ensures that even more individuals know that help is available when they need it.”

Fiona Prendergast, Health and Wellbeing Manager at Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, added: “We see first-hand the difference that tailored physical activity can make. Whether someone is preparing for treatment or rebuilding afterwards, movement can help improve energy levels, mobility, mental wellbeing and confidence.

Just as importantly, our sessions create a sense of community. They provide a safe, supportive space where people can meet others who are going through similar experiences, share encouragement, and realise they are not alone. Active Move is about empowering individuals to take that first step, knowing they will be supported by experienced instructors in a welcoming and understanding environment.”

The campaign comes as Fife Sports and Leisure Trust prepares to open a new Health and Wellbeing Hub at Duloch Leisure Centre in partnership with Fife Council, more information on this will be available soon. The new hub will become a dedicated base for the organisation’s award-winning Active Options programme, which includes Active Options, further expanding support for individuals with long-term health conditions.
