Take the first steps to a 5 km run – join Run Club Fife

Ever thought about running? Not quite sure where to start?

Well, joining Run Club Fife could be the perfect first step.

On offer is a supportive environment – one that gets you running and building up your stamina to take part in your first parkrun

In case you didn’t know, “parkrun” is a regular running event covering five kilometres – or just over three miles.

And once you’ve tried Run Club Fife – you’ll be well on your way . . . .

The new Club is being delivered by Fife Sports and Leisure Trust at Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre in Glenrothes.

Six weeks for £20

It’s a six-week programme, costing just £20, for all the coached sessions.

You can attend on Wednesdays at 6.45 pm or on Fridays at 10 am – or both sessions each week for six weeks. There’s no additional cost to attend all 12 sessions over the six weeks.

The Club is open to people aged 16 and over – and complete beginners are welcome. Twenty places are available for the new intake of runners on Wednesday 26th of August 2026.

Booking is really simple.

Just hop on to Eventbrite to sign up.

(You’ll get an instant confirmation. The system will also email you before the first event. We recommend you speak to your GP if you have any concerns before embarking on a new exercise regime.)

Expert coach

Coach George MacDonald is leading all the sessions and will give expert guidance to build your running confidence.

Organisers say this is all about increasing your stamina and running safely and effectively.

Evelyn Crichton, the Fitness Experience Lead at Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, says: “This is all about community, connection, and supporting those who are starting or returning to their running journey.

“Each week, George will guide you with a different focus — helping you build fitness and confidence at your own pace in a supportive and welcoming environment.

“This six-week programme is designed to prepare you for your first parkrun – which we’ll aim to complete together as a group. We’ll also celebrate your progress every step of the way.

“As our club grows, we’ll be expanding to more venues and introducing progression pathways for those ready to take it further. Before you know it, you’ll be running further, faster and with more confidence.”

Evelyn said a previous Run Club at the Michael Woods running track “exceeded all expectations”.

Confident runners

She said: “It transformed nervous beginners into confident runners and created a community united by encouragement, determination and achievement.

“The results have been nothing short of remarkable. The ultimate celebration came when participants took on and completed their very first parkrun at Riverside Park in Glenrothes, on Saturday 18th July.

“With the expert support of coach George, they crossed the finish line. They proved that, with the right guidance, anything is possible.

“Their stories, achievements and feedback speak for themselves.”

So what did the participants think?

Enthusiastic response

Jackie was enthusiastic. “I couldn’t attend every session but absolutely took so much from the club . . . . . Starting each run slow was a game changer for me! I didn’t need to be that 13-year-old girl, racing her pals to the finish line.”

Mari admitted: “I could hardly walk, far less run! If it wasn’t for Run Club Fife and the bespoke training with George, I would never have imagined I could have completed a 5K parkrun.”

Sharron was an experienced running coach who took part in the earlier sessions.

“I initially joined hoping to gain a few new insights, but I left with so much more,” she said. “The programme challenged me to reflect on my own coaching practice, broadened my knowledge and introduced valuable new techniques that I can immediately apply.

“The educational content was exceptional, significantly boosting my confidence.”

What’s parkrun?

parkrun is a free, community event where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer over a 5 km route (just over three miles). Events usually take place every Saturday morning at more than 1,400 locations across the UK. As well as events for adults, there are also junior parkruns for 4-14 year-olds and their families. Organisers say these events are “positive, welcoming and inclusive”. They also say “there is no time limit” and “no-one finishes last”. Find out more at https://www.parkrun.org.uk/
