RAF Veteran to Fitness Enthusiast: Edward Pennycook’s Inspiring Journey at 95

Former member of the Royal Air Force (RAF), Edward Pennycook is a regular at Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre, where he’s become a familiar face over the past 17 years. At 95 years old, his commitment to fitness is as strong as ever, showing that it’s never too late to start living an active life.

Edward shares his home with his wife, Mavis, 92, in the same community they’ve been part of for many years. With his RAF background, Edward knows a thing or two about discipline and teamwork, qualities that he continues to embrace today. While he no longer serves his country, he has found a new mission: to remain as fit and active as possible.

“I’ve always been active, but my fitness journey started later in life. I was 78 when I first stepped into the gym at Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre. I had no grand ambitions, just a simple desire to get fit. Little did I know, it would become such a crucial part of my routine.”

Edward is the most senior member of Fife Sport and Leisure Trust. When asked how this makes him feel, he responded, “Going to the gym makes me feel younger. If you’re thinking about being more active, don’t hesitate. The gym isn’t just for the young. It’s for anyone who wants to feel better, both physically and mentally.”

When Edward first started going to the gym, his goal was simply to get fit. Now, he focuses on staying mobile and maintaining his health: “I know that if I stop going, I’ll lose some of my mobility,” he says. “It takes discipline to keep going, but it’s worth it”. Edward’s commitment to his fitness routine reminds us that having goals, no matter how simple, can help keep us on track and improve our quality of life.

Like many who embark on a fitness journey, Edward faced his own set of challenges. He explains, “I tried using home gym equipment, but it just didn’t work for me. I always found an excuse not to use it. But coming here, to the leisure centre, gives me the motivation I need.”

It’s not just the structure of the gym that keeps Edward coming back; it’s also the people and the sense of community at Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre. He explains, “The company is great. There’s a good atmosphere, and the staff are always friendly. The other gym-goers are nice too. If I’m having trouble with something, they’re quick to help.”

Edward’s experience highlights the critical role that a supportive community can play in sustaining long-term fitness goals. Whether it’s encouragement from staff or fellow participants, this sense of belonging has been a key part of his success.

The benefits of Edward’s dedication are evident in his day-to-day life. “I’m fitter than I was when I started. I can still touch my toes!” he proudly declares. “And I don’t groan when I pick something off the floor now.” These might seem like small achievements, but for Edward, they represent significant victories over the limitations that can come with age.

Edward also shares a light-hearted lesson from his time at the gym: “I fell off the treadmill once because I didn’t use the safety clip,” he laughs. “Now, I always make sure to use it. It was a good reminder that safety is important, no matter how long you’ve been going to the gym or how experienced you are!”

For those on a similar journey, Edward offers the following advice. “Listen to your instructor and get a fitness plan that suits you. Don’t try to do too much too soon. It’s important to find a routine that works for you and stick to it.”

As Edward approaches his 96th birthday, his focus remains on staying active and enjoying life with Mavis. His story is a reminder that with the right mindset and support, anyone can continue to lead an active and fulfilling life.
