Trust pays tribute to local volunteer

Fife Sports and Leisure staff have paid tribute to a local man who gave up his time to help others participating in physical activity classes aimed to improve health and wellbeing.

John Russel, who recently passed away, aged 65, from Burntisland, was one of the first volunteers to take part in our volunteer programme designed to support people referred to its health programme.

John started volunteering over four years ago and was previously a participant in the trust’s cardiac rehabilitation programme following his own cardiac incident some years earlier. Taking his experience of being referred to a specially-designed physical activity class, and, the health and wellbeing benefits it delivered, John wanted to offer help and support to others.

John volunteered at numerous classes every week, giving his time, energy and commitment to reassuring and motivating others.

Anita Jefferies, Move More Fife development officer for Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, said: “John was a much appreciated member of the volunteer team and he will be sadly missed. He provided great support and commitment to others, giving advice and confidence to those who may have never experienced a physical activity class or used a gym before.

“John volunteered four times a week – supporting classes at Beacon Leisure Centre and Templehall Community Centre, he also trained as a walk leader supporting participants in Move More Fife Walking which is designed to help people living with and beyond cancer.

“He was a quiet, caring man and had a great way with people – he was a huge help to class instructors and his contribution will be missed by class participants and Fife Sports and Leisure Trust staff.”
