Charitable trust launches falls prevention programme

We are launching a programme to help those who are at high risk of a fall, or who have recently had a fall, to improve their balance, strength and mobility in order to prevent further risks.

We are adding the targeted-prevention sessions to our long-running and successful health programme which supports people living with long-term health conditions.

The Active Stability programme will start at the end of the month and will initially be delivered at Duloch Leisure Centre, Dunfermline with the aim of other sites to follow. The sessions will run for 16 weeks with participants supported with a variety of different exercise options tailored to the individual’s ability. We are accepting referrals from any health professional or service provider who works with people at risk of falls.

The sessions will be delivered by our experienced health team members, Gavin Keith and Susan Wilson, who have recently been qualified as Level 4 Postural Stability instructors.

Fiona Prendergast, health and wellbeing manager, for Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, said: “We are very excited about this programme – it’s a great addition to our health programme which supports people living with conditions such as cancer, dementia, diabetes and cardiac disease and it is another great example of partnership working delivering for local people.

“Research tells us that those living with health conditions, who participate in tailored physical activity sessions, experience health and wellbeing benefits that in turn can alleviate symptoms and reduce the need for further medical intervention. In addition, participants on our health programme regularly report that they enjoy meeting other people and sharing experiences.”
